Actually, the superhero MMORPG City of Heroes should have been switched off since 2012. But after it became known that City of Heroes could continue playing on unofficial, private servers, a lot has happened to these private servers.

That was the status so far: In the middle of April 2019 it was announced that City of Heroes was continued to operate for 6 years after the official shutdown of the servers by private hand . The corresponding server is called SCORE and can only be accessed by invitation.

SCORE offers its members the ability to restore old characters from the original City of Heroes so fans can just pick up where they left off.

This created a huge outcry in the community, because many games that were not invited felt ignored. They thought the community would stick together and were disappointed they did not know about SCORE.

That’s what happened: A group of fans independent of the SCORE operator Leandro Pardini has now also gained access to the source code from the City of Heroes private server.

The exact circumstances of how this went are not very clear. As MassivelyOP reports, the code was uploaded to a discord server and then spread. However, the code does not include the full game. It still needs to be upgraded to work.

In the meantime, the troupe has already created a test server from the code and according to MassivelyOP , over 8,000 players have registered for it within a few days. Currently, the server can support only 2500 players at the same time.

While it was possible for SCORE to restore its old character, this will probably not work for the new project in the future. This was announced by one of the team members on Discord. Whether SCORE itself will continue, was neither confirmed nor denied.

What does that mean for fans? For fans of the original game, that means they may soon have access to a City of Heroes again. In a post on reddit, some of the fans distributed information about the server.

Although NCSoft, the operator of the original City of Heroes, was clearly aware of the matter, it has not responded yet. Until a decision comes from NCSoft, the private servers float in a gray area.

We advise you not to let any money flow and not get involved in illegal actions. If you are not sure, you should wait and see. The unofficial successor, City of Titans, is due to be released at the end of 2019 .

Where does the fascination with City of Heroes come from? City of Heroes was an MMORPG in which players could slip into the roles of superheroes and super villains.

Instead of using traditional classes and skills, City of Heroes worked with superpowers. These could be used in battles together with other heroes against huge opponents coordinated and provided for a unique momentum.

For many fans there has been no substitute for this kind of superhero game since the end of City of Heroes.

Do you have an old MMORPG that you still celebrate?
