Mortal Kombat: Former Employees Accuse The Study Of Poor Working Conditions And Harassment

Mortal Kombat 11

Over the past six months, we have increasingly heard stories related to poor working conditions within the video game industry . Whether it’s Rockstar, BioWare or Epic Games and Fortnite , in any case we find ourselves reading about developers forced to work much longer than normal for long periods of time. Now, a new report from PC Gamer allows us to discover that even the developer of Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm Studios, is involved in this reality.

” I have been working overtime for four months at a time,” said a former QA tester, Isaac Torres. ” Regularly doing 90-100 hours a week and working every single day. I know someone who was on the office couch so as not to risk falling asleep while driving.

It seems that the extra work (called “crunch”) was so intense that it was not strange to see employees sleeping at work and walking around the office in their pajamas . Even personal commitments had to be overshadowed: a developer who worked on Mortal Kombat 9 had been able to have only two free moments in more than four months (his birthday, on a Sunday, and a friend’s wedding, Saturday night) but having to stay constantly on the phone to organize work.

Furthermore, NetherRealm Studios has been formally charged with harassment by two employees , but the lack of support from colleagues – scared of the repercussions – and the action of lawyers hired by NetherRealm has led to the premature closure of the case. ” We have revealed the harassment, the secret nicknames that the developers had created for all the female employees and so much more …”. NetherRealm has in practice responded to the allegations by not renewing the contract of these two people.

The developer and producer, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, have not released any official statements regarding what is reported in the article. What do you think about it?
