Marvel Studios: But When Will Spider-Man 3 Arrive in Theaters?

Spider-Man: Far From Home has exceeded $1 billion in box office receipts worldwide, becoming the most successful film on the character, and it seems inevitable that Sony Pictures will give the third episode to the franchise along with Marvel Studios.

Obviously, with the absence of the title in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe last July and the various rumors that they would like the Marvel/Sony agreement at risk, many have thought the worst for the spider in the cinema.

But let’s go back for a moment to the San Diego Comic-Con and to an interview conducted by Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios. During the interview, Feige explained: “We discussed at length whether to announce also Phase Five. We have already planned them, we have five years ahead of us, but then I thought we announced eleven projects in two years: it’s already so much.”

Those eleven projects announced over the course of two years (2020-2021 vintages) are those that will make up the Phase Four of the MCU and that was unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con. However, let’s take a quick account. The films and series announced were: Black Widow, The Falcon, and the Winter Soldier, Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Loki, What If…?, Hawkeye and Thor: Love and Thunder. There are ten titles in a total of the eleven to whom Feige referred in the interview … oversight or is there something more? That eleventh title is really Spider-Man 3?

Being a film distributed by Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios will not be able to announce it in a panel dedicated to them (being almost totally Disney) and will have to let Sony do it separately. It is therefore likely that, if that eleventh title is real, it will be Spider-Man 3. But when will it be released? Following the logic of Sony, which imposed on Marvel a title on the wall every two years (2017 and 2019), so it is likely to come out in 2021 (July?), which would confirm the presence of the film in Phase Four and how “one of the eleven “titles that will compose it.
